Former Anorexic Builds Life-size Barbie Proportionate to the Doll
She stands about six feet tall with a 39" bust, 18" waist, and 33" hips. These are the supposed measurements of Barbie if she were a real person. I built her as a part of the first National Eating Disorder Awareness Week (NEDAW) at my high school, later introducing her to Hamilton College during its first NEDAW in 2011.

Yeah, I think girls self image should be guided by their parents, not by their toys. If my self image was reflected by my toys, I'd have "C" shaped hands, a giant nub on top of my head, yellow skin, and no knees. There's nothing wrong with weird shaped dolls, just make sure girls know that isn't the real look of beauty.

Well that's part of it...and it's not literal, but the things that fly into a girls mind all the time are quite subtle and many times we as guys have no idea how complex these things can be. One of the things is seeing these kinds of proportions and being told she's beautiful, this is beautiful, and then the girl wants to be called that...to be accepted like her friends accept barbie. She starts by making her doll look a way for her friends to accept her and play with her, and as she gets older she does the same to her own body to be accepted. Parents have kinda the same effect when they tell you how handsome you are, but mom doesn't count because she's mom she HAS to tell u that kinda thing...it can be dangerous if parents don't step in early and let their girls know what's rly up u kno?

I think girls oversensitivity to these things is another cultural factor that parents can have a big influence on for the better. When a girl (or boy for that matter) is brought up with a healthy dose of reality and isn't spoilt, they learn to look at things with a strong sense of self esteem. Sure there are occasionally kids that go wild away from their upbringing, but I think parents don't usually want to admit their own failure. Few people these days take responsibility for anything.
