I remember reading something a long time ago about some lady from the east coast moving here (I live in CA) and finding that over time she became less friendly towards people, particularly strangers. Had to do with the fact that people are (on average) much more rude/anti-social here. She eventually realized it was affecting her personally and she had to make a conscious effort to turn it around. Point is, I've lived here my whole life...and even so this story struck a chord with me. The point was basically not to let the attitudes of others change your attitude. So, I still hold doors for people, even if they don't care, and I still say "Hi" to people when I walk by them, even though NOBODY does this on the west coast...and I don't let it bother me than 90% of the time nobody says anything back.
