And yet, despite the fact that the Spanish genetically integrated everyone they conquered, there are still many full-blooded Mayans to this day. So maybe they DID see the Spanish coming, since they were the ONLY natives who SUCCESSFULLY avoided being conquered by them.
This is a good example of someone acting like they know a lot about something that's outside their field of expertise. Sorry Neil Degrasse Tyson, but a historian you are not!
Justin Currie Where was it before they came? Sorry, but there was no Mayan empire long before the Spanish arrived, nothing to subjugate.... something even children know, so Neil Degrasse Tyson fails considerably with that one.
Justin Currie Really, what peculiar standards you have. They are around today. On top of that, their customs are not only maintained, they are celebrated by many, something that would be hard to say even of the Sioux in the Great Plains of America, the most well-known of the US's Native Americans. I don't think one needs an "empire" to not have been subjugated....
On that note, the Spanish still have a country, but it'd be hard to compare them at all to the glory of the Spanish Empire, and don't even get me started on the Portuguese, with their reputation for incredible laziness, despite having discovered almost half the world, so such standards just don't hold.
Ben Miller Ok I will admit that I messed up, was thinking of the Incan Empire, my mistake there. Last time I checked the Mayan peoples lives were completely altered, they were used as slave labour, had no rights of their own and still do not have their own country today at least the Spanish and Portuguese can claim that. Also, insulting an entire nation that you have probably never even been to is just downright childlike. Even if there was no unified empire and it took 170 years they still subjugated all the Mayan lands and people. Their culture survived though, whoopie friggin do, so did the Irish culture and they got their country back.
Justin Currie Who insulted anybody? You have poor reading comprehension, and you missed over half of what I said. Congrats.
Seriously, "last I checked" Mayan children are taught their culture and beliefs, how to practice them, that they are something to be proud of. You keep talking about the past, well I'm talking about NOW!
Obviously, since everything I've just told you is true, everything you've just told me about "slave labour,... no rights,... don't have their own country" is irrelevant, because the past is passed. And as I already pointed out (obviously went over your head), having your own country doesn't mean diddly shit, and if you think otherwise, you're incredibly simple-minded (since the concept of nation-states is a relatively new one).
they acttualy did they predicted floating houses with sails on them would come to them and unload many gods who where half men and horse. this discription they then saw acomplished when the spanish arrived because when they saw spanish soldiers on horses they thought they where hlaf man half horse so they DID see the spanish coming.

Yes, but this "2012" was based on the Julian calendar, at the time. When the switch was made to the Gregorian, modifications were never made. So, that date has already passed.
And knowing is half the battle!
