How is that racist? It is actually what went down in history and is probably why the black rights movement was such a big deal. They went being slaves and picking cotton to having all the same rights as whites. Pretty sure it isn't racist but rather acting as a reminder of how it used to be? Just saying.
They didnt get equal rights until 100 years of not being slaves, this is pretty racist because people focus on the desegregation and the huge movement to get what they equally deserve, not on something they shouldn't have to be reminded about because it was a dark time of history.
Black people used to pick cotton all day on plantations owned by rich white people. It was their job.
By "job," I mean they were forced to do it. they were slaves.
Bringing it up is sort of a faux pas. The implication here is sort of an unpleasant one.
Kyle T McMasters it probably isn't. I used to work at Kroger and their Black History Month displays always contain items such as hair relaxer and they have specials on fried chicken in the deli. I'm not even kidding.
Abid Ali It's not racist, racist would be someone telling them to go pick a cottonfield. Where as the way they are portraying the cottonballs could be to show that white men pick cotton now too. So please, explain how in any way, its racist?
Malcolm Hetherington It's unintentional racism due to the fact that it triggers your subconscious to think about racist thoughts, when your brain otherwise wouldn't if it was just a wall of cotton balls without that sign. Racism isn't just a verbal action, it can be portrayed in several other forms as well.
Malcolm Hetherington I guess you have a point. "Here, black people. Here's some cotton. You don't have to pick it like your ancestors did!" Totally not racist or tasteless at all.
Let's be honest that might be done without any tact, but it's not racist. It's Black History Month for God's sake. What else pops into your mind BESIDES racist issues when you hear that? Now if you really want to stop racism then don't pull the racist card at every little thing. Now The Grape Soda and Fried Chicken stuff. That's what we'd call cultural foods. It's the equivalent of Mexicans liking... Mexican Food. So if we want to stop racism do we really need a Black History Month? Should we freak out that we have the first Black President? No. If all you do is keep going back to the time when there was segregation then there isn't any room for integration. Now by no means is it unimportant stuff... just there isn't a reason to treat it like it's a big deal.
Difference between racism and stereotype?
Racism is belief that one's one race is superior to another.
Stereotypes involves categorizing groups of people base on inaccurate or generalized attributes.
While stereotypical, this picture does not say anything about one race being better than another.
On the other hand, all of those trying to say this is racist should leave those racist thoughts to yourself. Try not bringing racism to a stereotype fight.
